Each year, National POW/MIA Recognition Day gives Americans an opportunity to remember and honor the brave service members who were prisoners of war (POW) and those who remain missing in action (MIA).
Remembering Their Sacrifice
POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed on the third Friday of September. It is a time to recognize the courage and sacrifice of military service members who endured captivity and to remember those whose whereabouts remain unknown. For families of missing service members, the absence of answers can continue for generations. This day reminds us that their loved ones have not been forgotten.
The familiar POW/MIA flag, featuring a silhouette of a prisoner of war and the words “You Are Not Forgotten,” serves as a powerful reminder of this commitment.
