September 10 | World Suicide Prevention Day
At The Salon Professional Academy Battle Creek, we believe beauty and wellness are about more than appearance. They are about connection, confidence, compassion, and creating an environment where people feel seen and valued.
World Suicide Prevention Day, observed each year on September 10, is an important reminder that every life matters and that reaching out can make a difference.
You Are Not Alone
Life can bring difficult moments. Stress, loss, loneliness, financial challenges, relationship struggles, academic pressure, and many other experiences can sometimes leave people feeling overwhelmed or hopeless.
We may never know what someone is carrying beneath the surface.
That is why a simple question such as “How are you doing?” or “Are you okay?” can be meaningful. Taking time to listen without judgment can help someone feel less alone.
We don’t always need to have the perfect words. Sometimes, being present and willing to listen is an important first step.
The Beauty and Wellness Industry Can Make a Difference
As future cosmetologists, barbers, estheticians, manicurists, massage therapists, natural hair professionals, and beauty industry leaders, our students are preparing for careers built around personal connection.
Guests often share more than their beauty goals during a salon or spa visit. They may talk about their families, relationships, work, stress, challenges, and everyday lives.
This creates an opportunity to practice compassion, empathy, and active listening.
However, beauty professionals are not mental health professionals—and we don’t need to be. Our role is not to diagnose or solve someone’s problems. Instead, we can create a welcoming environment, listen with care, recognize when someone may need additional support, and encourage them to connect with qualified professionals or trusted people in their lives.
Small Acts of Kindness Matter
Suicide prevention is not only about responding during a crisis. It is also about building communities where people feel connected and supported.
A smile.
A kind word.
Checking in with a friend.
Listening without judgment.
Including someone who feels left out.
Encouraging someone to seek help.
These simple actions can help create a culture where people know they matter.
Know How to Reach Out
If you or someone you know is struggling or experiencing thoughts of suicide, help is available.
In the United States, you can call or text 988 to connect with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Trained counselors are available to provide support during moments of emotional distress or crisis.
If someone is in immediate danger, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
You can also reach out to a trusted friend, family member, educator, counselor, healthcare professional, or another person you feel comfortable talking with.
Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It is an act of courage.
Creating a Culture of Hope
At The Salon Professional Academy Battle Creek, we are proud to educate future beauty and wellness professionals who understand that their work can have an impact beyond the service itself.
Every guest deserves to feel respected.
Every student deserves to feel supported.
Every team member deserves to feel valued.
And every person deserves to know that they are not alone.
This World Suicide Prevention Day, let’s make time to check in, listen, show kindness, and remind the people around us that they matter.
You never know how much a small act of compassion could mean to someone.
